Native plants are those that grew in a particular area before the arrival of the first Europeans. They are plants which are adapted to the specific environments in which they evolved, and which are part of a complex community of interdependent plants and animals.

In southeast Michigan, these communities range from prairie fens, to conifer swamps, to oak-and-hickory forests.

Our native plants are wonderfully diverse; they include huge shade trees, tiny woodland flowers, tough prairie grasses, and flowering shrubs.
